Change your default browser from Safari to FireFox Mac OSX

So you've downloaded (or about to download) FireFox and want to change your default browser from Safari to FireFox on your Apple Mac OSX but for some reason you can't find where to change the default browser!
It took me a little while to find it myself but there is a way and it's not a system hack.

Here's how to change the default browser for Mac OSX

  • If you haven't already,
  • Once FireFox is installed open Safari (yes that's right... Open Safari!)
  • Click on the menu at the top of the screen that says "Safari" then click on the third option that says "preferences"
  • From the window that appears click on the button that says "General"
  • You'll see a drop down menu that's labeled Default Web Browser, it will read Safari or Internet Explorer or what ever web browser you have as default at present. Click on the drop down menu and select FireFox you have now changed your default browser to FireFox. You can now close the Safari preferences window and then quit Safari

Now whenever you click on a web link in an email or any other program that opens a web browser, FireFox will automatically open up as your default browser.

I find FireFox much more stable than Safari on OSX. Safari seem to have trouble with style sheets that web sites commonly use and Safari crashes ALL THE TIME!
